Golden Hour & Unposed Memories: The Best Late Summer Activities for Northern Colorado Families
There is a distinct shift in the air when late summer hits the Front Range. The sun sits lower in the sky, casting the mountains in a warm, honey-toned light. The evenings feel a little more precious, and parents everywhere are looking for ways to soak up the final weeks of the season before the back-to-school rush begins.
As a lifestyle family photographer, this is an exciting time of year. The lighting is magical, the energy is relaxed, and families are focused on just being together. I love it because we are right on the cusp of autumn 🍁🍂🎃 and even though in my heart the official first day of fall is July 5th, the world around me is finally starting to see things my way!
If you want to freeze time and make the most of these remaining golden weeks, here are five unforgettable late summer activities right here in Northern Colorado that double as perfect backdrops for beautiful, candid lifestyle photos.
1. Plan a Golden Hour Ice Cream Date in Downtown Fort Collins or Greeley🍦
There is nothing quite like a spontaneous trip for a cold treat to celebrate a warm August evening. Head over to Walrus Ice Cream in Fort Collins or Jenny’s Malt Shop in Greeley. Grab a seat outside, and let the kids be kids! My favorite flavor right now is the s’mores flavor blizzard at Dairy Queen.🤤
The Lifestyle Photo Op: Don’t worry about sticky hands or messy faces—embrace them! Sit your kids facing the setting sun to catch that beautiful glint in their eyes. Take close-up shots of their sticky fingers and wide smiles instead of forcing them to sit still and look at the camera.
2. Splash and Play in the Poudre River or Horsetooth Reservoir💦
Before the water gets too chilly, take an afternoon trip to the River Bluffs Open Space in Windsor or the shores of Horsetooth. Let the kids skip rocks, dip their toes in the water, and look for minnows. At Horsetooth, you can tell them about the town of Stout that is submerged under the water, or the catfish the size of a car that is said to roam the bottom!
The Lifestyle Photo Op: Get down on your kids' eye level to capture the pure joy of them splashing in the water. Action shots of water droplets catching the low afternoon sun look spectacular, lively, and completely unprompted.
3. Take a Late-Season Hike at Devil’s Backbone or Lory State Park🥾
Late summer brings incredible views to our Northern Colorado trails, from tall golden foothills grasses to rugged red rock formations. Take the family on a screen-free evening hike just before sunset to explore the trails. You know your girl don’t be hiking in this heat lol, but it is a very enjoyable activity.
The Lifestyle Photo Op: Capture the quiet moments of connection. Take photos from behind as your kids walk hand-in-hand down the trail, or get close-up lifestyle shots of their hands holding a newly discovered leaf or rock.
4. Explore the Farms and Sunflowers in Loveland, Brighton, and Erie🍓
Late summer is peak harvest season in NoCo. Visiting a local farm stand such as Scofield Fruits in Loveland, picking fresh berries at Berry Patch Farms in Brighton, or finding a local sunflower field like Anderson Farms in Erie creates a vibrant, sensory experience for little ones. We had so much fun at Anderson Farms on a field trip last fall, so I was excited to find out that they had sunflower fields this time of year!🌻🌻🌻
The Lifestyle Photo Op: Let your kids explore the rows of plants naturally. Capture the candid interactions—the high-fives when they find a massive sunflower, the focused look on their faces as they pick fruit, and the genuine laughs when they try to carry too many items at once.
5. Wind Down with a Backyard Fire Pit and S'mores🔥
As our Colorado nights start to cool down, it’s the perfect excuse to fire up the backyard fire pit. Gather the family around to roast marshmallows, build the perfect s'mores, and watch the stars come out over the Rockies. Find some variations of s’mores recipes here. I think the Elvis (banana/bacon/peanut butter) is my favorite.
The Lifestyle Photo Op: Once the sun sets, turn off your camera flash. Let the warm, orange glow of the fire completely illuminate your family's faces. The high-contrast shadows and cozy atmosphere create deeply emotional, nostalgic portraits that feel like a memory.
4 Lifestyle Prompts for Real, Candid Smiles (No "Say Cheese" Required!)
If you are trying to capture these moments on your own phone or camera, ditch the phrase "look at me and smile!" It instantly makes kids freeze up and look tense. Instead, try these lifestyle photography prompts to spark genuine laughter and natural movement:
The Secret Whisper: Have one child whisper a "top secret, super silly" food to their sibling or to a parent (like “smelly broccoli socks!”). The anticipation and the whispered silliness always trigger immediate, authentic giggles.
The Monster Chase: Tell your kids to run away because a giant, slow-moving monster (you!) is coming to tickle them. Set your camera to burst mode, hold it down at their eye level, and snap photos as they look back over their shoulders laughing.
The Koala Hug: If you have toddlers, tell them to climb up a parent like a tree trunk and hold on like a koala. This creates beautiful close-up, squishy-faced connection shots filled with comfort and warmth.
The "Don't You Dare Smile" Game: Look at your child through the camera lens and say in a very serious, playful voice, "Whatever you do, do not smile. If you smile, you lose." Kids absolutely cannot resist trying to break the rule, resulting in the biggest, most joyous grins.
